photoblog image Train Tuesday

Train Tuesday

A rare occurence; Wales in the sunshine. In fact, it was around 21 deg C on that April day; crazy for that time of year. This is "David Lloyd George"/"Dafydd Lloyd George" on the 2ft gauge Ffestiniog Railway, Porthmadog, North Wales. The loco has the English name on one side and its Welsh name on the other. The loco is newer than it looks; it was built in the Railway's own workshops in 1992.

Oh, it reminds me of my childhood days, but is quite younger. Is 'Railwa' the Welsh word for English 'Railway'?
Alan: A rushed late edition to Shutterchance as I the one I had queued for today vanished since I checked yesterday evening. Grrrr!! I was surprised to find just how modern this locomotive is. Thanks, Philine.

I didn't know they did new builds, Alan
Alan: Their railway workshops build a fair number of steam locomotives of the traditional style, many for other railways, too.
It may be relatively new but it is still a fine locomotive
Alan: Very powerful apparently.

1992, well I’ll be.
Alan: You'll be what? Ah.. sixteen years younger than you are now.

Oh heavens - what a lovely image!
Alan: Thank, you, old bean. I can wholeheartedly recommend you seeing this for yourself. Wales is not always as warm and sunny as it was this day, though.

It looks good next to the blue sky.
Alan: I was veyr fortunate with the weather; it's not always like that in north Wales smile
An early taster for when Maureen and I spend a week in an apartment just outside Porthmadog in June. We plan to ride the Welsh Highland Railway despite the somewhat expensive fare.
Alan: I have to say that I prefer the Ffestiniog Railway although the Welsh Highland has some HUGE locos and some cracking scenery. Get a seat on the side overlooking the harbour on the WHR as you will then be on the better side for the Aberglaslyn Pass.
I am amazed they are still building steam locomotives...
